How is this program different from therapy?
StopPulling.com is not therapy and is not intended to replace individual behavior therapy, but is an interactive behavioral program that will help you to identify situations associated with your pulling behavior, and will recommend strategies to help you change those behaviors.
Whereas therapy involves a psychologist or therapist, interacting with an individual or group, StopPulling.com was designed by psychologists, but it is the program itself that interacts with the subscriber. StopPulling.com is like reading a self-help book that guides you through the parts that are relevant to you. The program changes based upon your individual responses and information. We call it "self-help with a bang!"
The program can be used in conjunction with behavior therapy for people who are already in treatment. StopPulling.com can be a nice complement to therapy, however if you are already in therapy, let your therapist know you are considering subscribing to the program so that they can integrate the program successfully into your treatment.
Is StopPulling.com appropriate for people younger than age 12?
StopPulling.com is intended for people 12 years and older. Because this program involves daily monitoring of behavior, the developers felt like children aged 11 years and younger may not be developmentally ready to work the program.
How much time each day does the program take?
StopPulling.com was designed to take very little time each day. Depending on your pulling, frequency, the amount of time the program requires will be different for each person. For example, if your behavior is very frequent during the day, you will spend more time recording episodes than someone who only has 1-2 episodes per day.
I have tried therapy before and it didn't work, why should this work for me?
Oftentimes people have been in therapy that may have addresses other issues, but did not effectively address their hair pulling behavior.
What is unique about this program is that it was designed specifically to assess hair pulling behaviors and high risk situations, will build a behavioral analysis to help you understand how your behavior helps you, it provides specific strategies to combat urges in your high risk situations, and will help you maintain your progress over time.
How much does it cost?
StopPulling.com costs $29.95 a month that is billed to a credit card (less than a dollar a day). Although this cost is more than you would pay for a self-help book, it is dramatically less than the cost for individual therapy.
How does the program work?
StopPulling.com is easy and fun to use, with graphics and icons that will guide you easily through the program. StopPulling.com is designed to take very little time each day (less than 15 minutes), but requires commitment on a regular basis. As with any worthwhile lifestyle change such as starting to exercise or quitting smoking, you will have to work hard to see results. Working hard means paying attention to your pulling habits and being willing to journal about your pulling behaviors. However, your reward will be feeling in control of your life, increased confidence, and living a healthier life.
Overall, how long will I have to be on the program?
StopPulling.com requires about a 7-10 week commitment to complete the first 2 Modules. During this time you will log on and report every urge and/or episode you have (less than 15 minutes per day on average).
Once you have reached the Maintenance Module, you can remain there indefinitely, monitoring your urges and learning about relapse prevention.
I have been pulling for most of my life, is it possible for me to ever stop?
Although it is difficult to "undo" behaviors that have been in existence for 20-30 years, it is possible! More important than "how long" as person has pulled, is "how ready" they are to make changes.
Regardless of how long a person has been involved with a behavior, it is important for them to feel ready to make some lifestyle changes to
modify it.
